What warning signs mean I should pause or abandon a purchase?
Stop when you cannot identify the seller, calculate the total, explain the product's purpose, verify key terms, afford the payment without harmful debt, or use a protected payment route. Also pause for countdown pressure, off-platform requests and uncertain returns. A missed promotion is cheaper than an avoidable loss.

Pressure
Urgency reduces checking time but does not improve the product
Affordability
A lower price is not a saving if the payment creates harmful debt
Option value
Waiting preserves money and the ability to choose later
1
Close the checkout for ten minutes and write the need, full cost, seller and return route in one sentence each.
2
Confirm the payment fits available money after essential commitments without relying on uncertain cashback or resale.
3
Remove the discount badge and ask whether you would still choose this exact product and seller.
4
If any critical fact remains unclear, save the research and leave without paying.
Use six stop questions
Before payment, answer: What exact problem does this solve? Who is the seller? What is the total today and later? What evidence supports the key claims? How do I return or dispute it? Can I pay without displacing essentials or depending on uncertain future income?
If you cannot answer one, pause. Give yourself enough time to compare the product and seller using the FTC shopping checklist. A countdown does not make the seller, product or terms more reliable.
Remove the promotion from the decision
Imagine the page displayed only the final total, product and seller. Would you still choose it? If the answer depends on feeling that you are “saving,” verify the reference price and compare doing nothing. Money unspent is not a percentage discount; it remains available for a later need.
Walk away from unsafe transaction paths
Stop when a marketplace seller moves you off-platform, requests an irreversible payment, changes the item or price after contact, or will not state a return address. Stop when an unfamiliar site cannot provide coherent identity and contact information. Do not continue merely because you have already invested time.
If shopping or debt feels difficult to control, this checklist is not a substitute for qualified local support. Pause purchases and seek help from an appropriate consumer, debt or health service in your jurisdiction.

That is possible. Decide the maximum acceptable total in advance; losing one promotion is preferable to buying under conditions you cannot verify or afford.
Is buy now, pay later part of the price?
It changes payment timing, not the product's cost or usefulness. Fees, missed-payment consequences and affordability require separate checking under the applicable agreement.
