How can I avoid subscription and auto-renewal traps?
Published · Updated · 3 min read
What should I check before starting a free trial or auto-renewing subscription?
Confirm the trial end, first charge, renewal frequency, future price, minimum term and cancellation method before entering payment details. Save the terms and confirmation, set reminders before each deadline, and test that account controls work. If price or cancellation is unclear, do not rely on the trial being free.

Annual price
Compare commitment and refund terms, not just monthly equivalent
1
Write down the trial end, first charge, renewal interval, ongoing price and minimum commitment.
2
Find the cancellation control and notice period before signing up; do not assume deleting an app cancels billing.
3
Save the terms and confirmation, then set reminders several days before relevant deadlines.
4
After cancelling, retain the confirmation and check the next statement for another charge.
Map the whole contract before the first click
The prominent monthly equivalent may hide an annual payment, minimum term or higher renewal. Record what is charged today, the conversion date, the amount and frequency after conversion, and whether a discounted first term renews at a different price.
Find the exact cancellation route. Note whether cancellation ends access immediately or at the end of the paid term, whether notice is required before renewal, and whether refunds are available. Taking a screenshot of the sign-up terms and confirmation gives you a dated record if the interface later changes.
Use two reminders
Set one reminder early enough to evaluate the service and another before the final cancellation deadline. If you cancel, save the confirmation page or email and check the next statement. Contact the provider promptly about an unexpected charge; payment-provider dispute rights and time limits vary.
Do not optimise for the trial price
Compare the service at its likely ongoing cost. If you would not knowingly pay that amount, the safest route is not to enter payment details. A free trial is not a saving when inattention creates an unwanted contract.
